EcoTextiles/Organic Textiles/ Green Textiles - also Organic Chic or Eco-sustainable

Eco Products are in growing demand globally! - to support Biodiversity.
With increases in oil prices and scarcity of resources becoming ever more apparent, (which in turn further drives up the price of inputs of production), EcoTextiles are becoming a very real alternative in terms of sustainability when compared to normal chemical intensive fabrics based on fossil fuels.

What is Sustainability?

Sustainability can be defined as: “The continual improvement of business operations to ensure long-term resource availability through environmental, socially sensitive, and transparent performance as it relates to consumers, business partners, and the community.”
In essence, sustainability is changing the way we do things in order to be more Eco Friendly or “Green”. This results in the preservation of the natural resources upon which we depend on. The entire supply chain, if 'responsible' would alleviate climatic change substantially.

Organic Fibre Varieties:

HEMP
By far, the crop with the most potential for eco-friendly textile use is hemp. The ecological footprint of hemp is considerably smaller than that of most other plants considered for their fibres. Hemp plants grow very quickly and densely which makes it difficult for weeds to take hold, eliminating the need for herbicides and artificial fertilizers. It requires no irrigation as it thrives on the amount of water in the average rainfall, and it is highly pest-resistant.
Hemp has naturally long fibres which makes it suitable for spinning with a minimum of processing. Those fibres are also long-lasting. In fact, historically hemp has been used for making naval ropes that were used in and around water because they resist rot. If it held up to those conditions, imagine how well it will wear as a pair of jeans, or a shirt.
Hemp fabrics come in a variety of weights and textures. You can purchase fabric or clothing, woven or knit; buy yarn, rope, belts and a wide range of products made of this versatile plant.

ORGANIC COTTON

Organic cotton is much more environmentally friendly than the traditional variety as it uses no pesticides, herbicides, or insecticides during the growing cycle. There are many growers of this crop, and the number is steadily increasing.
Usually manufacturers using this plant to make textiles, follow up the process by using natural dyes to further reduce the amount of chemicals dumped into our ecosystem.
Even more promising is a new type of cotton that was traditionally grown by the Aztecs - coloured cotton. Sally Fox, a biologist, spent ten years perfecting a coloured cotton with long enough fibers to be spun into thread. She managed to get it to grow naturally in shades of green and brown. It has the added benefit of not fading (in colour) and in fact, it gets more vibrant with the first few washes. This naturally coloured cotton eliminates the use of dyes altogether, making it extremely “Eco – Friendly”.

SOY SILK

Legend has it that Henry Ford wore a suit made of soy silk in the 1940s, but the US Government of the day decided to go with rayon instead. Here in the 21st century, though, it's soy silk that has the greater potential.
Soy silk is made from the by-products of the tofu-making process. The liquefied proteins are extruded into fibres which are then spun, and processed like any other fibre. You can purchase skeins of soy silk yarn and test it out for yourself. The high protein content makes it receptive to natural dyes, so you can create your own colours.

CORN FIBER - FIBRE FROM CORN STARCH

Ingeo is created by extracting the starch and then sugars from corn, and processing them to make a fiber, which can be spun into a yarn or woven into fabric. Corn fiber is both durable and highly sustainable.

BAMBOO

Newer manufacturing facilities have begun using technologies to chemically manufacture bamboo fiber that are more benign and eco-friendly. The chemical manufacturing process used to produce lyocell from wood cellulose can be modified to use bamboo cellulose.
Bamboo is a highly renewable fibre, and it is probably this property that has resulted in it being classified as "eco-friendly". Bamboo is known for:
- growing more than 1 meter a day
- requiring no pesticides in growing
- requiring 33% of the water cotton requires
- can be cut down and grow again
It also has natural antibacterial properties and the fabric "breathes". The resultant is a biodegradable product.

COCONUT

There is an increased demand in coconut fabrics or fabrics made from the husks of coconuts. This is a sustainable fibre that as an increased strength and durability as well as the anti-bacterial properties reduce odors.

RECYCLED AND RECYCLEABLE PET POLYESTER

Recycled
PET polyester is made from water bottles and is sustainable in that no new fossil fuels are used to make polyester. This textile is used over a wide range of textiles and garments from performance to fashion. Recycleable polyester is PET polyester uniquely made from water bottles but garments made from these fibres are recycleable and can through a process known as the ECO-CIRCLE be recycled from textiles to new textiles.

SEA CELL

Sea Cell is a fibre made from kelp with unique properties. Sea Cell improves circulation, heals skin tissue and has many other healing properties. This fibre is hugely in demand in the Spa Industry.

Supply Chain Management (SCM) Consulting

Lizette is a speaker in Asia known for her papers on supply chain and sustainability in the supply chain. Lizette consults clients and suppliers on both Sustainability and Supply Chain Optimization. Lizette works closely with SGS in Hong Kong and produce garments as well as consulting.

InnovAsians guides its clients to "Think Big, Start Small!" by making small and cost effective changes towards a ‘greener’ vision. Innovasians tagline - BRIDGE TO BIODIVERSITY - is about supporting clints in the transitiry stage of development to a sustainable product range.

“Going Eco/Green’ does not imply huge capital investment. The transformation is inevitable, InnovAsians coach and guide clients through a ‘phased’ approach. Think Big......Start Small. It is about finding affordable solutions in the process of getting to sustainable goals set by the client for achievement 3-4 years later.
